I'm a Friend of Eclipse (but I'm not allowed to show it)

A little over two months ago I became self-employed. A lot of the work that I do involves open source and most of it is done inside Eclipse: java coding, PHP development, version control, build automation and so on.

I decided to make a donation to the Eclipse Foundation to show my appreciation for the excellent tools, the smart people that develop them and the nice community around this all.

I have donated USD 50 to the Eclipse Foundation. Unfortunately I'm not allowed to show this using the Friend of Eclipse logo because the donation FAQ states: "The Friends of Eclipse program is for individuals, so the logo should not be used on an organization web site."

I understand that there are different types of membership for organizations, but the cheapest level available to commercial organizations (which my 1-person company is) costs USD 5000. That amount of money simply sets the bar too high for small companies like mine.

Personally, I think the gap between USD 35 and USD 5000 is large enough to avoid confusion between being a "Friend of Eclipse" and an "Associate Member". I opened a bug to discuss the question: "Why aren't (small) companies allowed to use the Friends of Eclipse logo?"

PS: Don't worry. I'm not going to ask my money back. It was/is well spent ;)

I think you are mixing two different things up. It's totally fine to use that logo on your personal blog. After all, the money is spent out of the same wallet. You have donated the money.

However, using the logo to promote your commercial interests is a different shoe. I would not like to see that the "Friends of Eclipse" could be "abused" for this.

PS: your comment captcha is weird. ;)

On the bright side, isn't $5000 USD like $5 EUR these days ;P?
