HTC Hero

Last week I bought an HTC Hero (running Android) from the Redcoon online store.

Why Android?

  • Android allows me to legally install my own software, unlike the iPhone where Apple decides what you are allowed to install.
  • Android allows me to write software in Java, a programming language I am already familiar with, unlike the iPhone which would require me to learn Objective-C.
  • Android devices are cheaper than Apple's iPhone.
  • In the past I have used an HTC TyTN running Windows Mobile and I never liked Windows Mobile.
  • The Palm Pre looks interesting but there is no European availability date yet.

Why the HTC Hero?

  • The HTC Hero is simlock-free which means there's a wide choice of stores that offer the device.
  • The HTC Hero is HTC's third Android device. It has a better battery and camera than earlier models and includes a standard headphone connector.
  • The HTC Hero has a layer on top of Android (called Sense) which includes a clean UI and tight integration with Facebook, Flickr and Twitter.
  • Other devices that will become available during the next couple of weeks and months (from HTC or other vendors) have hardware specs similar to the HTC Hero. It looks like faster processors are at least 6 months away.

Why Redcoon?

  • Redcoon is cheap (446.49 euro) compared to Expansys (519.99 euro). Just keep in mind not to pay by credit card to avoid the 1.5% surcharge.
  • They ship to Belgium (which is something some of the cheaper dutch online stores don't do).

Initial impressions:

  • The order process at Redcoon and the delivery by GLS are pretty good. No complaints.
  • The hardware looks great and feels solid.
  • The documentation is inside the box is in German which probably means this is actually a German device. This might also explain why the HTC Hero is still not available at stores like PDAshop.be.
  • The standard software Android plus HTC's Sense is a joy to work with. Some online reviews reported a sluggish UI but I have not experienced this. Everything looks polished and feels snappy.

I'll write some more detailed blog posts about the HTC Hero device and the Android software after some further testing.

I read somewhere

I read somewhere (pdashop.nl? not sure) they have him already in the Netherlands, but not in Belgium, as there would be a separate 'Belgian version'

As long as the hardware is not country specific.... the software is free :)

Keep us posted, I was considering this phone also.

The release of the HTC Hero

The release of the HTC Hero in Belgium has been delayed because of some legal issues with the youtube app according to astel.be.

The "belgian" HTC Hero may simply be missing the youtube app, just like the Proximus HTC Magic..

Please tell me if you tried

Please tell me if you tried to use the navigation (SatNav) in your car.
I know there is a free application (AndNav) for GPS on Android but I don't know how good that is.

Can you tell me some details because I really want this phone but a good GPS solution is really a "must have" for me. (Now I'm using Windows Mobile and TomTom is simply great.)

First of all,the legal issue

First of all,the legal issue is probably with SABAM rather than with the government, because they were about to sue Google because there are 'illegal videos of belgian artists on youtube.
That said, is there a possibility to use dutch as the language for the spellingchecker and still be able to use the virtual azerty keyboard?
And then in reply to Dio Mondus: TomTom and Garmin are both in the process of adapting their software for the android OS, because of the success of the software on the iphone.
And if you really want one, you can download the youtube app onto your phone, with this easy guide: http://www.golb.be/youtube-op-je-proximus-htc-magic/

Keep in mind that a Proximus

Keep in mind that a Proximus (Belgian) version of an Android will never get an OTA ROM update to prevent unwanted high download volumes. OTA ROM updates are done based on IMEI number, so it's possible you'll receive an OTA ROM update if you are using a device ment for the German market. As lang as you do this when you're on Wifi, or if you have a big data bundle, this doesn't need to be an issue though.

Rom updates for Proximus HTC devices can be downloaded from the HTC website (no updates available yet)

ROM 2.73.405.5 is now

ROM 2.73.405.5 is now released in about any offered language, even Dutch. But, what about the custom ROM for Belgium (sans youtube app)? How is it going to be released (specifically for Mobistar, concerning my case)?

Na contact op te nemen met HTC supprt kreeg ik volgend antwoord: "I have checked your serial number and your phone is listed as a Mobistar-branded phone. This means you will need to download updates from the Mobistar website. I would recommend you check the Mobistar website regularly to check for further news about updates. "
