In order to get the latest ROM (2.73.405.5) on my HTC Hero I had to root the device because HTC only supports ROM updates through a Windows machine.
Rooting the device was fairly easy. I followed this video to root the device and afterwards I decided to install the infamous MoDaCo custom ROM (which is based on the 2.73.405.5 ROM) using these video instructions.
The good news is that the user interface of my HTC Hero is now very responsive. Good work by HTC!
Unfortunately it still takes a long time before my Hero switches to 3G after the Wi-Fi has disconnected. Initially it looked as if this was fixed by the updated ROM but the problem has reappeared. I guess it only worked temporarily because I wiped all data during the rooting process. If you encounter the same problem please go and star Android issue 2207 to raise the priority in the issue queue.
Now I'm eagerly waiting for a build of Android 1.6 (aka Donut) for the HTC Hero...

Your firmware is not in this list of official firmwares. Maybe you should ask at the MoDaCo forum.
The ROM version of the hero

The ROM version of the hero shouldn't really matter very much, since all official firmware versions can still be rooted as far as I know. Mine is rooted as well (modaco ROM with compcache), and I haven't had any problems with it. Anyway, if you can root it, you can flash the new firmware. If you can't root it, nothing happened...
The difference in the Belgian version is that the youtube app is removed for some reason.
You'll need to install a patched recovery ROM, so you can boot the device in a special recovery mode. In this mode you can do a nandroid backup (which means that you can always restore the current version), and then install the custom ROM. I'm not going to post further instructions, since I see you already got some response on the xda-developers thread.

I am completely new to rooting and installing custom ROMs and I was really nervous on doing it but after watching a lot of video tutorials on rooting my HTC and loading the Hero Rom, everything went fine. Never thought that it would be that easy.

Does the HTC Hero require mobile network in order to use the GPS? Or does the GPS work without network connectivity? Thanks.

The GPS works without network access (mobile of WiFi). Of course, most apps that try to do anything with the GPS location require a network connection to load their data (maps,...).
