I noticed that my HTC Hero is unable to connect to my (fairly old) USRobotics SureConnect ADSL Gateway when I enable WPA AES encryption on the wireless access point.
There are people who have reported the same problem with other phones on other Wi-Fi access points so I guess this is not specific to my HTC Hero nor my USRobotics device. It must be something in Android itself.
I switched back to TKIP encryption even though it is less safe.

Just for reference for the people who are still messing around with their Hero on WiFi.. In my case the solution was choosing a different (shorter or less complex I dunno) pre-shared key. This was the case on two different routers, so maybe this goes for others as well.
